Can Dogs Live Up to 30% Longer ?
Last year Eukanuba came out with results of 10 year study and with very bold claims that dogs can live up to 30% longer.
The study was conducted on 39 adult Labrador Retrievers -12 males and 27 females with mean age of 6.7 years old at that time. Dogs were placed on a Eukanuba diet. According to the study:
Eukanuba formulation incorporated primary use of animal-based protein sources, a particular ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, multi-source carbohydrate blend, enriched antioxidant levels, specialized fiber blend, L-carnitine, and a dental tartar reducing agent.
Daily food portion for each dog was derived from the amount of food necessary to keep the dog within: “…optimal body condition range.”
Dogs were carefully observed and had at least 30 minutes a day exercise routine.
The exercise yards contained enrichment devices such as agility course apparatus, wading pools, a variety of dog toys, and shaded areas.
All dogs in the study received all necessary examinations such as, fecal test for parasites, blood test for heartworm at least once a year and all dogs received flea & tick as well as heartworm prevention vaccines on a monthly basis. Dogs were supervised and observed by trained veterinary team. Other diseases and cancers etc. were treated on individual basis. They also received other necessary annual vaccinations.
