Your Dog and Cat Doesn’t Get Along? 7 Things that You Should Do
|4. Give your cat space
Cats love to have their own space. Give your cat a good place, preferably one that is out of reach for your dog. This may include a baby gate on your doorway or a cat tree. This will allow your cat to escape. Cats usually just attack dogs when they are backed to a corner with no other way out.
5. Show them equal love
Animals also get jealous. Therefore, it would be best to show them equal love so that the other animal does not easily become a target of envy.
6. Be the middle person
Several weeks into having them together, you can spend time with both of them, with you as the middle person. You can watch them play together; making sure that there is a balance between discipline and praise.
7. Set some realistic expectations
If either your dog or cat has never tried living with other animals before, it should be better to expect that they will not immediately understand the way to deal with each other. On top of that, you will not have an idea of their potential relationship until they are introduced. Dogs generally see cats as play or prey, which means that they should be taught good manners well in advance. Most owners even have to go through a long acclimation period before they get along together well.
