It remains under investigation why Buddy, former Longview Mayor David McWhorter’s sandy, 95-pound Labrador retriever, got himself deep inside an underground tunnel the length of a football field. All that officer Kevin Nichols knew for sure, when he arrived on Inverness Street about 10:20 a.m., was that the nearly 12-year-old dog was in a tight spot.

“Everybody in the neighborhood knows Buddy,” McWhorter said, adding that children will ring his doorbell to see whether Buddy can come out and play.

McWhorter heard Buddy whining and barking, seemingly from far away.
