The Dog’s Eyes

  • When the dog’s eyes are wide open and alert, it means he is trying to get your attention. The dog is challenging you and expects you to respond and react firmly.
  • When you come across a dog that is unfamiliar to you, it is best to avoid looking at the dog directly into his eyes, because this can send a signal to the dog that you are being aggressive.
  • When your dog blinks and squints his eye, it’s time to play his favorite game of fetch, tug of war or take him out for a walk. This action tells you your dog is up for a game and ready to play and have some fun. However, if the squinting and blinking are quite more often, the dog might be in pain, so it is best to take him, to the vet.

The Dog’s Ears

  • If the dog’s ears are inclined forward or are standing straight up, it means he is reacting to something on the environment and is curious about something. It means the dog is looking around and is paying close attention to what is happening around him.
  • If the dog has his ears flat against his head, it only means it is scared. Most of the time, only one ear lays flat and is often the left ear. If he is around an unfamiliar person, this is how dogs often react. Try to coax your dog to calm down by petting him.

The Dog’s Face

  • When a dog yawns, it does not always mean he is sleepy. It usually means he is nervous or grumpy. It usually happens to puppies. Most of the time, when younger dogs are surrounded by bigger, unfamiliar dogs. If your dog yawns after you, it means he is most likely very attached to you.
  • When your dog is feeling stressed, pressured or in danger, he licks his face. This gesture may also be a dog’s way of encouraging potential aggressors to calm down.
