This Symbiotic Relationship Between Dog and Baby Elephant Saved A Life
The signs were worrisome. Brooding and depressed elephants are prone to many ailments.
They may stop eating, they may not get enough rest despite being inactive and they will have behavioral problems. The staff at Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage in South Africa decided to let the baby elephant get accustomed with their resident dog Duma.
While Ellie had been under intensive care for the treatment of several health problems, there was limited impact and recovery was very slow. Some improvements were encouraging but the baby elephant had to overcome the obvious sorrows. After meeting Duma, things changed.
Duma is a lively dog. Ellie got accustomed with Duma, started moving around and became more active. It was expected that Ellie will become more sociable but the pace at which he recovered is simply astounding. The friendship between Duma and Ellie has only strengthened with time and it is perhaps a lifelong one. This is not the first tale of friendship between dogs and elephants nor would it be the last. The fact that two animals, so distinctly different from one another and also with two absolutely different histories, can help each other and live happily is a cause enough to be joyous.
